BSU Alumna, Professor Feride Atsamba Awarded Honorary Doctorate

A famous scientist-Orientalist, Feride Atsamba who is the BSU alumna and currently a professor at Lomonosov Moscow State University, has been awarded honorary doctorate of Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University by the Academic Council. Acting Rector, Associate Professor Merab Khalvashi awarded Professor Atsamba the Shota Rustaveli Medal.

Professor Feride Atsamba is a significant contributor to the development of the BSU. She has kept scientific and educational ties with the BSU over the years, providing scientific, methodological and professional assistance. Professor Atsamba has published 2 monographs and over 60 scientific papers on the problems and the social structure of Arabic countries and on the issues of operation of Islamic religious institutions.

Professor Feride Atsamba supervised 21 PhD theses. She has been Head of the Scientific Committee of the journal Vestnik MGU (The Oriental Series).

Feride Atsamba is a native of Batumi who was born on June 28, 1922, In 1938-1940 she studied Russian language and literature at the Batumi Teachers' Institute. She continued her studies at Lomonosov Moscow State University and successfully graduated it in 1950.

Since 1956 Feride Atsamba has been working at the Oriental Languages ​​Institute and the Institute of Asian and African countries at Moscow Lomonosov State University. In 1990 she became Head of the Research Center of the Asian and African Countries’ History of Religions.   

The famous scientist is awarded a title of professor emeritus of Lomonosov Moscow State University. She is a honorary citizen of Batumi and holds titular Award of Friendship for her merit and great contribution to the overcoming a temporary estrangement between Georgians and Abkhazians (Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II).

As an educator, Professor Feride Atsamba contributed to the scientific development of many young Georgian and Abkhazian scholars.
