The Economics of Historic Preservation. Donovan Rypkema is an author of the cultural preservation textbook, The Economics of Historic Preservation, and founder of the organization, Heritage Strategies International. Mr. Rypkema is notable as a preservationist because he is less interested in preserving cities as museums but rather understands preservations powerful role in economic development. His three decade career includes endless examples of how preserving heritage buildings can add to the local economy (including jobs, paychecks, tax revenues, and real estate profits).
 
Mr. Rypkema is recognized as an industry leader in the economics of preserving historic structures. His three decade career includes endless examples of how heritage buildings can add to the local economy (including jobs, paychecks, tax revenues, and real estate profits). He has undertaken assignments in 49 states and the District of Columbia. In 2012, the National Trust for Historic Preservation awarded him the Louise du Pont Crowninshield Award, the organization’s highest honor, for his work in the preservation field.
 
Rypkema was educated at Columbia University, where he received a Masters of Science degree in Historic Preservation. He has lectured widely on economic and preservation issues relating to rehabilitation, community development and commercial revitalization. Mr. Rypkema’s short courses and workshops have been delivered to architects, bankers, developers, preservationists, planners, and downtown managers.
 
Rypkema teaches a graduate course on the economics of historic preservation at the University of Pennsylvania where he received the 2008 G. Holmes Perkins Award for Distinguished Teaching.
